Holiday season in Italy

This year I’d like to tell you a bit about Christmas and New Year’s traditions in Italy. As we all know already Italy is a country of traditions! They differ a bit from region to region or town to town just like the dialects, but some are common all over Italy and those are the ones I’d like to share.

Christmas is well loved and celebrated in Italy as all over the World and by the end of November most of the shops are decked out for the season.

On Christmas Eve the whole family gathers at the table laden with goods with Presepe in the center. Presepe is Nativity Scene in Italy - Joseph, Mary and animals in the stable. Just a few figures or all the table taken by scenes of local life. At Christmas time a lot of towns hold Presepe exhibitions and artists compete to make the best one.

At midnight the youngest in the family holds the statuette of baby Jesus and leads the „train” of a sort where everybody follows holding the person before by the shoulders all around the house as they sing «tu scendi dalle stelle» - You come down from the stars. At the end of the song baby Jesus is put into Presepe and unwrapping of gifts starts.

One more Christmas tradition is Italian Christmas cakes that grace every table - panettone and pan d'oro.

Right after Christmas on the 26th is St.Stephen’s Day - Santo Stefano. He is the patron saint of Italy. I can’t remember any particular traditions of that day besides getting the whole family together one more time to feast from the heart and stomach!

Let’s move on from Christmas to New Years.

Traditionally it’s not a family holiday like Christmas, but a celebration with friends, usually a noisy and fun party. Often Italians go skiing for a few days over the New Years or just to get away to the mountains. One of the holy traditions of New Year’s Eve is cooking lentils and then eating them at midnight, of course without utensils, just with hands! Lentils are followed by meat delicacy called cotechino. It is a fresh sausage made from pork, fatback, and pork rind. Eaten with hands of course  Tradition says eating lentils at New Year’s will bring you lots of money in that year. As long as I remember, and especially since the crisis, it didn’t bring us any, but we still do it every year 
Last holiday of the season is Epafania - Epiphany, that is celebrated 12 days after Christmas on the 6th of January. Gift giving for Christmas is a novelty in Italy, that tradition isn’t older than 30 years. Before that the gifts were brought by Befana – old, ugly but kind witch that comes on her broom at the night of the 6th and places the gift into the stocking hung at the window or fireplace. Traditionally you have to leave Befana a snack. If the child was good for the year he or she will find stocking full of sweets, dry and fresh fruit, but if he or she was bad the stocking will be filled with coal. This tradition is getting forgotten now but my husband always leaves a sockful of chocolates and a tiny witch figure under my pillow 

Hope you enjoyed my little story,

Dreaming of a White Christmas

I grew up in Siberia where every Christmas is white. By the end of November snow dresses up streets, buildings, trees, and everything around. So when the winter holidays come, the city is already decorated by Nature. Now that I have moved to California I miss that white splendor. Every Christmas season I see fabulously decorated trees, beautiful lights, cheerful Santas... but no snow.

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know...

I always wondered how this song written by an American can express my feelings so well. Imagine my surprise when I found out that Irving Berlin who wrote this song was actually born in Siberia and left Russia to move to the US with his parents when he was a child. He must have missed the snow just like I do!

To be fair I’m not the only one who likes to dream of a white Christmas. Considering that the song became the best seller of all times, people all over the globe find something in this song that touches them. Is it nostalgia of happy childhood times? Or is it a search for innocence and simplicity in this demanding and overwhelming life? Or maybe all-white just seems more romantic?

No matter what the reason, we like to recreate a feeling of a white Christmas with handmade decor. You can find crocheted snowflakes, felted snowmen, and lots of snow white accessories created by the Russian Team on Etsy.

May your days be merry and bright,
and may all your Christmases be white!

Winter fun

Winter is a beautiful time of the year.

The snow is covering many parts of the country and it is a fun time of year for us all with lots of activities.
It is great to be able to ski during the weekends or just have a snowball fight.
It's also nice to play chess with the friend by the frosty window and to look out at the quiet white field.

It's is also cozy to sit in front of a fireplace with your knitting  and a cup of steamy coco that will cheer you up and make you feel warm.

Winter is always an inspirational time for the painters and photographers.

And for us crafter's souls it is also time to get cozy, think of what inspires us the most and make some little cute gifts for the coming holidays for ourselves or the people we love.
Don't say you are too busy, there is always a time for the holidays in our hearts!

Virginia in winter

I've been living in Virginia for 8 years now. It's a wonderful state with hot summers and mild winters. Virginia is home to a lot of beautiful trees like pink flowered Dogwood or Holly and brightly colored birds like Northern Cardinal that is an official state bird of Virginia.
rusteam handmade blue
In winter Virginia loses its colors as so many trees and shrubs stay naked yet beautiful bushes like Holly with their green and shiny leaves and bright red berries make Virginia landscapes less pale and dull.

As the climate is very mild in winter and temperatures rarely fall below 40 F. It's such a pleasure to spend a day outside walking in a park which Virginia has a plenty. Days are mostly shiny and although one doesn't see much hues and colors in the winter landscapes, it's still worth spending a few hours enjoying the beauty of green pine trees, bamboo forests and bright reds of Holly berries here and there.

During a few days the winter it gets so warm that some shrubs actually start blossoming. Flowers on shrubs in the middle of winter look weird and beautiful. Then the frost comes and the plants are caught in the middle of their mixed up spring awakening. I wonder what happens with these poor shrubs when the real spring comes in a few months. Do they recover and blossom in the spring?

Come visit us in Virginia! As you’ve probably heard that "Virginia is for lovers". It's definitely place to check out!

Wonderful things wednesday - Winter woodland forest

Now that winter is upon us, how do our forest friends keep warm? They can’t wear warm mittens or coats but nature has given them their own means to stay warm.

Foxes, squirrels and other mammals grow a soft under fur to help them keep warm regardless if they hibernate like squirrels with their little stashes of food or are out playing in a snow like a foxes. Owls and other birds get a thick down under their heavy flight feathers.

One of the things we can do to make the winter easier for them and enjoy watching them, is to put out natural foods in a place that is visible for you. Some ideas are corn, suet, wild bird seeds and other such foods.

A winter forest is full of life even if you can not see it. Just stop and look around!

Our team has taken inspiration from the winter woodland forest and created many craft items for you to choose from!

Let me take you to the fairytale…

Story by Tanya (CozySeason)

Imagine gabled red rooftops, half-hidden courtyards, medieval churches, narrow streets and a city wall dotted with guard towers … You are in Tallinn's Medieval Old Town.

Tallinn pictures at Rusteam blog
A couple of steps further on the cobblestones and the sounds of the contemporary town are left far away. You can look back and you can not see the modern buildings anymore, just the medieval ones.

Tallinn pictures at Rusteam blog
Thanks to the city wall the centre of Tallinn survived in an excellent condition. In the 16th century the wall was 2.4km long, 14-16m high, up to 3m thick and included 46 towers that gave city good protection from the frequent attacks.

Tallinn pictures at Rusteam blog
The Old Town offers a great collection of gothic, baroque, and renaissance buildings. Just take a walk and feel the beauty of Tallinn's architecture.

Tallinn pictures at Rusteam blog
Some streets in the old town of Tallinn are so narrow that two ladies in the huge crinolines (when still wearing crinolines) could not get by each other. A cavalier had to fight for the right to his lady walk down the street first.

Wandering the Old City you can find a large number of churches. One of the most eye-catching is the Church of St. Olav. It has a 159-metre spire that used to be the tallest building in the world from 1549 to 1625 years. Such an extremely tall steeple was probably meant to be a maritime signpost which made the trading city of Tallinn visible far out at sea. However, it turned to be a very effective lightning rod. Throughout the church's history the steeple of St. Olav has been hit by lightning at least eight times and the whole church construction has burned down three times.

Tallinn is a living example of the influence of two cultures: European and Russian. Wandering the streets of the city you cannot miss the main and the most opulent and grandest Orthodox church in Tallinn - Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral.
The church's towers hold Tallinn's most powerful church bell ensemble. The ensemble consists of 11 bells, including the largest in Tallinn, weighing 15 tons and you can hear it playing before each service.

Being located on a sea cost, Tallinn has a local beach, Pirita, that is situated 5-7 kilometers from Tallinn's city centre. Nowadays Pirita is one of the favorite places in Tallinn for spending free time and not just during the summer. In a winter people enjoy visiting Pirita to watch the seaside winter sunset and to feed local swans and gulls.

Tallinn pictures at Rusteam blog
Don’t be afraid of visiting Tallinn at winter time! A cup of hot and spicy Glühwein and a pair of warm wool socks will make your stay in a fairytale town even more enchanting!
