Sapphire, the birthstone of September

Blue sapphire is the birthstone of September. Its name comes from the Greek word sappheiros, which means "blue stone". Some believe that the name sapphire is derived from its association with the planet Saturn. The name can roughly be translated to mean "dear to the planet Saturn".

Essentially, sapphire is the same mineral as ruby - corundum. When corundum is red or dark pink it is considered to be a ruby, otherwise it is considered to be a sapphire. This is why sapphires can be of blue, yellow, pink, purple, orange, or greenish color. There are also Padparadscha and star sapphires.



The prices of natural sapphires vary depending on their color, clarity, size, cut, quality and even origin. Price is also determined differently for sapphires of different color and rarity. Blue sapphires are relatively common and they are priced based on purity of their primary hue. Yellow and green sapphires are also commonly found. For pink sapphires, the deeper the pink color the higher their monetary value - the more they look like rubies, the more expensive they are. Sapphires also occur in shades of orange and brown, and they can even be colorless. There are also pink-orange sapphires that are called Padparadscha and are rare. Star saphires contain intersectng needle-like inclusions that cause an image of a six-rayed starto appear with a single overhead light source.

Peridot, the stone of August

Peridot is the August birthstone. The name Peridot comes from the Arabic word "faridat," meaning gem. According to other sources, пeridot got its name from the Latin word pæderot that later became an Anglo–Norman word pedoretés that was a name for a kind of opal. The third version is that the word peridot comes from the Greek word peridona meaning plentiful.

Since antiquity peridot was associated with nature because of its green color. The shades of green in peridot vary from yellowish-green to dark olive. The Ruby in Sanskrit is known as ‘Ratnaraj’ which means ‘king of the gemstones’ and rightfully so. Ruby signifies royalty and is dedicated to the Sun. In occult, this is a stone of special magical strength and power. Ruby will help it's owner to wage a battle with evil forces, to conquer fear.

Pearl is a June birthstone although it is not a stone at all. Pearls are produced by mollusks inside their shells by surrounding a foreign object, such as a grain of sand, by calcium carbonate in many concentric layers. Pearls come in variety of shapes and colors. An ideal pearl is perfectly round. Pearls can be white, pink, green, blue, black, yellow...


The word "pearl" in English language came from the French "perle" which, in turn, came from the Latin word "pernula" which means a "sea shell".


Pearls have been used in jewelry since antiquity. A pearl does not have to be polished or cut in order to give it luster which makes it the most convenient gemstone. For many centuries pearl oysters were collected by divers in many parts of the world. High quality natural pearls were very rare and commanded a high price.


As demand for more cheaper pearls grew, a process of producing cultured pearls was developed in the beginning of the 20th century. A tiny piece of shell or a bead was deposited into a living oyster which then was placed back into its natural habitat at an oyster farm. Pearls would form inside the shells over time, and it could take from 1 to 7 years depending on the species. Then pearls were harvested the same way it has been done for centuries.

Diamond is the the hardest and the most precious stone in the world. It also has remarkable optical characteristics. Most natural diamonds are clear and colorless, some could be yellow, brown, green, blue, purple and even pink to a degree - depending on the impurities present in the stone.

The word "diamond" comes from the ancient Greek αδάμας – adámas "unbreakable".

Raw diamonds are converted into sparkling gems through a multi-step process called "cutting". This is a multi-stage process where the final goal is to produce facets with specific angles between them which would give luster to the jewel.


Diamond is a symbol of strength, courage, and purity. Since the ancient times diamonds were used as religious and occult objects. This gem was believed share its qualities with its owner and to protect him. It was also believed that wearing a diamond protected the owner from black magic and would drive away the bad spirits. If someone would try to place a curse on a person wearing a diamond, it would backfire placing the curse onto the person casting the spell. In translation from Latin Aquamarine means "sea water" from aqua meaning water and marinus meaning sea.


In antiquity aquamarine was believed to be one of the most powerful magical stones. It was used in amulets meant to increase its wearer's foresight, keep him calm and protect him against storms and hurricanes. Amethyst, the mineral of the month for February

In Greek mythology a beautiful maiden Amethystos was pursued by the god of wine Dionysus, and was turned into a white stone so she would remain chaste. Dionysus then poured wine over the white stone as an offering dyeing it purple, and this is where the Amethyst stone got its name.

Amethyst is the most precious variety of quartz and the color of it can vary greatly, from a light pinkish violet to a deep purple, blood-red, and green.



Amethyst is believed to develop his owner's inner strengths, sharpen his wit, turn away evil thoughts, and give knowledge of the future in dreams.
